LaunchPad Marketing Survey Tool (for Commercial Design) Feb. 2006 - Apr. 2006
Technologies: PHP 4, MySQL 4, AJAX, PEAR, Apache 2, CentOS Linux

LaunchPad Marketing is a company that produces sample packs targeting specific ages and genders. Companies offering products like deodorant and shampoo pay LaunchPad to include their products in sample packs with similar products. LaunchPad came to us looking for a way to learn more about the customers who buy the sample packs as well as gather marketing information they could sell back to the participating companies.

To meet this requirement, I created a survey tool which allowed LaunchPad to create targeted surveys for each specific product pack. A web address and survey code were included inside each product pack with some sort of enticing contest (eg. "enter to win a free ipod by completing this survey"). The tool allowed for many types of questions to be created (eg. radio button, checkbox, text boxes). Each survey contained questions about the different products in the pack as well as collecting general personal information from the participant.

Perhaps the most impressive part of the project was the extensive reporting area. The software dynamically created pie charts and bar graphs for multiple choice (radio button) and multiple check (check box) questions. It also allowed customer data to be exported into MS Excel format for easy importing into existing databases. An email marketing tool was also created to allow LaunchPad to email customers when product packs similar to ones they have purchased in the past are available in stores.
Commercial Design and Multimedia Nov. 2005 - Feb. 2008
Technologies: PHP 4/5, C#, .NET, MySQL 4/5, MS SQL Server, Visual Studio 2005, Flash MX 2004, CSS, AJAX, Apache 1.1/2, CentOS Linux, Windows Server 2003

During my two and a half years at Commercial Design I worked on dozens of projects ranging from simple content sites to huge enterprise level applications. I was hired as a programmer, but the company nearly double in size during my time there and so did my responsibilities. By the time of my departure I was not only programming but also managing projects, scheduling tasks, interviewing and training new staff members, gathering requirements from clients, quoting new projects, drawing up specifications and strategizing with the owner.

I learned a lot during my time at Commercial Design and I've stayed connected with several of the employees and the owner. A few of the projects I worked on there are listed separately with more details in my portfolio.
SourceLink Jun. 2005 - Sept. 2005
Technologies: PHP 4, MySQL 4, FlashMX 2004, Windows 2003, IIS

SourceLink is a large print firm with clients like GM and Curves. I was contracted by them to help create a custom web-to-print ordering site for Curves franchises. They had a designer and Flash developer on the project already and needed some help with the ordering process and database design. I programmed a shopping cart and an extensive backend reporting system in an extremely short time frame. The software made use of Flash to make the customization step of the ordering process very interactive and easy to use, and I worked with the Flash developer to make this step interact with PHP and MySQL. Curves was very happy with the result and SourceLink is pushing more units and even attracted a few new clients as a result.

After the Curves project, SourceLink called me again to help with part of a GM project their junior developer was having difficulty with. GM dealership data was to be gathered and submitted from an external source (a .NET web service). At the time PHP's SOAP functions weren't as developed and I programmed this part for them using the nuSOAP library.
New Faces Talent Nov. 2004 - Aug. 2005
Technologies: PHP, MySQL, CSS, JS, HTML, Linux

New Faces Talent offers online portfolios to prospective models and actors. When I started working with New Faces, the owner had simply been making the portfolios by hand after people had payed. I was contracted to automate the portfolio creation process, allowing models to sign up themselves with minimal staff involvement.

During the 6 months following the launch of the new system I'd created, New Faces had over 30,000 new members with free portfolios, and sales of payed portfolios had not only increased dramatically, but were now also completely user-created (100% labour free!).

As the site continued to grow, I tackled performance issues related to increasing table sizes and web traffic. I also created an admin tool for support staff to use to moderate content and track sales.

New Faces Talent eventually moved its office to New York and it's membership and revenue are continuing to grow at a steady rate.
